It is not only a locally , but even a universally acknowledged fact  that during the  last few years , SL has failed miserably to hold elections  peacefully , fairly and with due respect to the sacrosanct right of the people to exercise their franchise fearlessly. Indeed, it is  now the common  question on the lips of the people as to why elections are held at all  if the Govt.’s aim is only to  win elections at any cost   even defeating the very purpose for which it is held ?.

ImageWijedasa Rajapske , PC and UNP candidate for Colombo District addressing the media at the UNP media unit today (26) said , the indictment  filed by the Govt. against Gen. Fonseka that he discussed politics while he was in service as an Army Commander is creating a bad  precedent , and augurs ill for the 200, 000 members of the Forces . Like how it has distorted the laws to prosecute Fonseka on this accusation , it can even twist the fundamental right of any officer of the Forces and claim that he has acted in breach of the employment conditions , even  if he discusses politics with his wife in the private bedroom.

Referring to the last month’s warning by the European Union (EU), to impose restrictions on the GSP + concessions with effect from 15th August  this year in relation to SL , the former Chief Justice Sarath Silva said , the remedial measures the govt. must take to obtain the GSP + is simple . All what the EU wants of the Govt . is for  it  to show respect towards human rights and freedom of expression in the country.

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC)  leader Rauff Hakeem , addressing a rally at Kandy said, the UPFA  in its desperation  after trying every treachery in the book to win elections , has commenced another intimidating  and fear instilling campaign with its candidates threatening Muslim voters with dire consequences if they do not vote for the UPFA. They have threatened that the Govt. which has all the resources to take revenge will avenge their anti Govt. actions.
