Following a communication by Parliament Secretary General to the UNP last week that the two new UNP members cannot be sworn in since the Parliament is meeting on the 6th of April for the exclusive purpose of passing the emergency , the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has addressed a letter to the Speaker LokuBandara yesterday (1) explaining that it was the Commissioner General of Parliament who initiated the action of informing the Commissioner of elections of the vacancies which have arisen in terms of S 64 (1) of the Parliamentary elections Act .

Addressing a massive election rally at Matara in support of UNF candidates of Matara District, UNF and opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said, the people of this country never experienced this acute suffering and faced hardships in SL’s history of 60 years after independence as during the last five years of rule since this Govt. came to power. 
UNP and Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe regretted that the Govt. is meting out inhuman treatment to a great War Hero , when it should be lavishing all the medical attention on him. Need the Govt. be reminded that the illness of Gen. Fonseka has its origin in the war he fought and won for the country ?. He did not fight a war for his family or himself , he emphasized.
