The main opposition party, the UNP in a statement issued yesterday (6) had roundly condemned the attack launched on the Buddhist monks who were staging a peaceful protest opposite the Railway station demanding the release of Gen. Fonseka held in detention by the Govt. without any charges being filed against him. These attacks are reminiscent of the brutalities committed in Myanmar against the Buddhist monks when they demonstrated against the military junta there , it added.

IUSF blames Govt. for the suicides of 5 students

The International University students federation (IUSF) blamed  the Govt. for the suicides committed by five final year University students . The Govt.’s failure to provide for the needs of the students in the internally displaced people’s camps had ed to these tragic deaths , it added.

Elections Commissioner regrets he cannot hold fair and free Elections because of the police and State media

The Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake told the Opposition parties when he met them , that he is unable to hold free an fair elections because the police and the State media are uncontrollable by him. Even the IGP had failed to carry out some of his instructions , he has regretted , according to UNP Gen. Secretary Tissa Attanayake.

Speaker fails to respond to two letters addressed to him by Opposition leader

ImageThe Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told in Parliament today (6)  that the Speaker has failed in his onerous duties by not answering the two letters addressed by him to the Speaker. These two letters were concerning the swearing in of the two new MPs appointed by the Elections Commissioner , he added.
