The main opposition party, the UNP in a statement issued yesterday (6) had roundly condemned the attack launched on the Buddhist monks who were staging a peaceful protest opposite the Railway station demanding the release of Gen. Fonseka held in detention by the Govt. without any charges being filed against him. These attacks are reminiscent of the brutalities committed in Myanmar against the Buddhist monks when they demonstrated against the military junta there , it added. |

The Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told in Parliament today (6) that the Speaker has failed in his onerous duties by not answering the two letters addressed by him to the Speaker. These two letters were concerning the swearing in of the two new MPs appointed by the Elections Commissioner , he added. 
UNP M P John Amaratunge told in Parliament today (6) that the Speaker by not allowing the three MPs appointed by the Elections Commissioner to be sworn in has not acted fairly and his conduct is biased.
