VATICAN CITY, Friday (AP) - The Vatican urged Sri Lanka to respect human rights and restart negotiations with the LTTE during a meeting between Pope Benedict XVI and President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Vatican said. ''In light of the current situation in Sri Lanka, the need to respect human rights and restart the path of dialogue and negotiations was stressed, as the only path to put an end to the violence that has bloodied the island,'' a Vatican statement said.''The Catholic Church, which offers a significant contribution to the life of the country, will intensify the delicate commitment to form consciences, with the sole aim of favoring the common good, reconciliation and peace,'' the statement said. The New York-based Human Rights Watch said earlier this week that Sri Lankan government troops and rebels had continued ''enforced disappearances,'' extra-judicial killings, intimidation and threats to the media. |

says President is the "devil and traitor" of the country.”The recent disclosures regarding the secret and diabolically manipulative deals with the LTTE by the Government is the most rude shock received by the people after the treasons committed by the traitors of Sri Lanka who betrayed the Sinhala Nation to the Foreigners. The Government is duty bound to explain and give a correct picture to the masses immediately, and clear the 200 million rupee sum given to the LTTE before the elections. Of course, the masses are now fully aware that the Government which is so resourceful in its capacity for lying can explain anything, even though the truth still stands out convincingly. It is little wonder therefore that Sooriyarachi had to say this about the President “ I thought he was the God and saviour, but now with so much facts surfaced against him I know as well as the nation knows that he is the devil and traitor of the country. |

It is as clear as daylight that the recent trend in Sri Lanka is to gag the mouths and intimidate any one irrespective of who or what lofty position he is in. Latest in this long line of death threats and grave persecution we are witnessing in our midst is that against the Opposition Parliamentary Member Johnston Fernando who has been well known for is integrity and efficiency when he was holding portfolios under the Government of Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe. Once again in keeping with the trend, the only ‘crime’ Mr. Johnston Fernando has committed is his daring exposures of the Government’s shady and murky activities; he made public the colossal Mig Jet commissions paid to the Government rank politicians. As these threat are reaching alarming proportions , Mr. Fernando has lodged a complaint to the Kurunegala Police, without much avail, as usual. |

"Inflationary spiral which now stands at 20 %"Gone are the days when the Central Bank , the premier financial State co-ordinator functioned without fear or favour spelling out the truth regarding the country’s financial position and orientation.! This truth has become very transparent and obvious based on the facts contained in the recent Central Bank reports . All financial experts are of this opinion and have expressed this in unison and overtly. While it is an indisputable fact that 38.2 billion rupees money has been printed creating an unprecedented inflationary spiral which now stands at 20 %, and the growth rate of Sri Lanka has plummeted to a new low although the Government claims falsely as standing at 7.4 %. The kin and henchmen planted by the Government in the Central Bank are glossing over, giving deceptive figures and pictures of a robust economy distracting the ailing common man from the stark reality. It is the view of well reputed and internationally acclaimed Financial experts that Sri Lanka is heading fast to the brink of irretrievable disaster unless the Government takes up an honest and corrective stance in all its actions instead of riding roughshod over a wave of seeming popularity. |

Until recently Bandula Gunawardena who has been castigating the Government’s policies when he was in the Opposition has suddenly somersaulted ( unique one at that ) to extol those very policies and vociferously justify them. What a talent!. The President who appreciates only this type of talent , not ability and honesty, we understand is proposing to record an official appreciation in his favour. The whole nation has realized an incontrovertible truth that Bandula Gunawardena has turned out to be a successful magician though he is an unsuccessful politician . His latest gimmicks finding solutions to the irredeemable country’s economic ills are only unhealthy reminders of the pavement magician who conjures up anything from nothing. Reduction of a few cents in the prices of LakSathosa goods, he feels has solved all the problems of the consumers. He crows about the cost of living having been brought down. What a mighty solution by a mighty magician ! |
