In response to a petition filed by the Campaign for Fair and Free elections (CAFFE) praying for an order to the respondents, the Elections Commissioner, Defence Secretary and the IGP to prevent the use of arms by unauthorized groups ,alleged acts of intimidation and violence by the Pillayan group, and for the conduct of a free and fair election scheduled for the 10th of May , the Supreme Court (SC) gave an order yesterday (9 May) to the Elections Commissioner to ensure a free and fair election of candidates for the Eastern provincial Councils.
The petition further alleged that the respondents have failed to ensure an atmosphere free from intimidation and violence. Further, it stated that the Pillayan group was carrying arms with the connivance of the respondents. |
