It is reported that the tender for the collection of garbage in Colombo City  is to be awarded  to a Company , ‘Burns International’ owned by a Casino king Ravi Wijeratne. Colombo Municipal Council Chief  Omar Kamil told the higher ups of the Municipality that   , he had been instructed by President’s Additional Secretary Gamini Senarath to award the tender to ‘Burns International’ .

Allegations of malpractices, frauds and corruption from all quarters  have been plaguing it  with the former Minister in charge Nimal De Siripala   accused of all round inefficiency in controlling them including the spread of diseases .

Huge sums of monies were collected under the name of the much publicized ‘uthuru mithuru’ program led by Minister  Dullas Alahaperuma when he was the former Minister of transport ostensibly to build a ‘Colombo gedera’ to provide lodging  to those who were traveling from Jaffna to Colombo by night train.

It is well to recall that at the previous elections, especially provincial Council elections, thousands and thousands of job applications were collected by ruling party candidates just before elections on the promise that the applicants will be given jobs after the candidate wins. Later, these collected application forms were picked up from the garbage bins of these candidates after the elections were over.

Minister of environment Champika Ranawaka criticized his own Cabinet of Ministers, some of whom he said are  spending many millions of rupees for their  personal election propaganda . In some cases over Rs. 300 million have been spent by a Minister, he lamented.
